summary: Silas decides he's had enough of Mariel and Koji constantly fighting.
Silas grabbed Mariel by her collar and pulled her away from Koji. She squirmed in his grip, but he stood a foot taller than her, and they both knew it was futile. She gave a perfunctory curse, and he shook her.
"Sit," he said, and he let go of her collar.
She fell heavily onto her heels, and opened her mouth to speak when she caught a glimpse of Aya standing with her arms crossed beside the bar. Aya's mouth, red with lipstick, twisted into a pout that Mariel dared not argue against.
Mariel sat.
Silas treated Koji more only a little more kindly, but hauled him over and bade him sit down. He unclipped the handcuffs from his belt, and Mariel groaned. To her, Silas was just Mr Licht: an unfortunate associate of the even more bothersome Kotobuki, both regulars and integral to the continued survival of the speakeasy where she worked. Perhaps she ought to feel grateful for them, but they grated too much on her nerves for that. It was easy to forget that Silas was also Inspector Licht, and he could arrest them at any moment if he changed his mind, but the clank of handcuffs reminded her.
Mariel gave Aya a pleading look, but Aya shook her head. "You got yourself into this one, sheik," she said. Her arms were folded against her chest.
"I ought to arrest both of you," said Silas, "for brawling and disturbing the peace."
"But think of the promotion they'd give you if you turned in Kotobuki as a rum runner than a common drunk," said Mariel, trying to sound reasonable.
"Hey!" Koji raised his voice in protest, and would have stood up again had Silas not given him a look that reminded Mariel uncomfortably at the nuns at school when she was a little girl. "I ain't drunk! You punched me!"
"You hit like a girl," she snarled.
"Speak for yourself, you dumb broad!"
"Shut up, both of you," barked Silas. "I won't turn you in, but don't give me a reason to change my mind. Hand," he said to Mariel, holding his own hand out expectantly.
"What are you going to do," asked Mariel, "give me a slap on the wrist, Sister Silas?"
"Not exactly," said Silas, clicking the one of the handcuffs closed. Mariel started to protest, but by then, Silas had already closed the other side around Kotobuki's wrist.
"You two fight like spoiled children," he sighed. "So you can sit here together and think about what you done. Miss Scarlett and I will go enjoy our evening without the pair of you ruining it with your childish bickering."
"You're not really going to leave me here?" asked Koji. He gestured to indicate the storeroom where he sat on a turned up barrel beside Mariel, whose hand, cuffed to his, followed the expansive arc he made.
"You'll have Mrs Delacroix for company," said Silas. He offered Aya his arm.
"I have never hated anyone as much as I hate you right now, Mr Licht," hissed Mariel, as Silas retreated back into the bustle of the speakeasy, ignoring her completely.
"Aw hell," groaned Koji. He hid his face in his free hand.
"For once, Mr Kotobuki, you and I are in perfect agreement."
