summary: Mariel bought Aya something special for Christmas.
"For you, Ms Scarlett," said Mariel, pressing a wrapped gift into Aya's gloved hands. "Merry Christmas."
Outside, the snow was falling thick and sticking to the streets. Frost patterns decorated the windows, and outside the blanket of snow covering the city gave it a gleam of purity.
Inside it was warm, and the partygoers milled about, dreading the blast of cold air and the journey through the cold city back home in the blizzard. Mariel waited until the last moment, until Aya was nearly out of the door, before finding her present behind the bar to pass on for Christmas.
"Ooh, thank you, sheik! Merry Christmas!" Aya leaned in to place a kiss on Mariel's cheek. "Shall I open it now or later?"
Mariel shrugged. She didn't trust herself to speak and not sound like a sap, so she stood mute for a moment with her hands jammed in the pockets of her trousers. "Up to you, I guess."
"Now, then! You know I can't wait!"
Aya pulled off her gloves and tossed them casually onto the table. She treated the package with much more care, gently tugging at the bow and peeling away the newspaper Mariel had used to wrap it.
She squealed with excitement as she tore away the remaining paper. "Oh, you didn't!"
On the polished bar sat a black No 1A Pocket Kodak Series II. While walking through the streets with Mariel, Aya had pressed her noes to the glass of a shop and clapped her hands with delight at the portable little camera.
Mariel had returned the following week to purchase it.
Aya leapt from her seat and threw her arms around Mariel. "It's the bee's knees, sheik! Merry Christmas, my dear!"
She placed a kiss on Mariel's cheek under the mistletoe Nikos had hung over the bar earlier that day, and Mariel flushed as red as the holly berries in Aya's hair.
