runaway_tales
prompt: sugar plum #6: all of the other reindeer
summary: house rules: you have to kiss someone if you end up under the mistletoe together! hijinks ensue. (Mariel/Koji)
notes: the eighth of twenty five kisses under the mistletoe at a Christmas party Nikos is hosting
Mariel slid off the kitchen table with a distracted apology and slipped past Aya out of the stifling heat of the kitchen into the cooler hallway. She tugged uncomfortably at her tie and furtively loosened the knot, weighing the pros and cons of excusing herself for a cigarette. On one hand, it would be a welcome excuse to get out of Nikos's apartment. On the other hand, Aya would spend the rest of the evening complaining and probably not kissing her as often as Mariel hoped.
Mariel was thinking about this, and not the clump of mistletoe pinned to the low ceiling, when Koji attempted to brush past her with Silas in tow, and Nikos's delighted laughter broke her contemplation. She pinched the bridge of her nose, warding off a headache. Koji made a face.
"Try anything and I'll break what's left of your face," she muttered viscously.
Koji smiled back, the picture of innocence. "Wouldn' wanna, anyway," he snapped back. He might have enjoyed Mariel's predicament more had her husband not loomed in the doorway.
"You're blocking the hall," grumbled Silas. "It's cold out here and I want a glass of that mulled wine. I can smell it from here."
"Yeah, yeah. Yer not the one who has to kiss 'er." Koji wrinkled his nose.
"Might as well get it over with," said Nikos, helpfully.
Both Mariel and Koji narrowed their eyes at him; after all, it was his mistletoe and his house rules. Koji bent forward and placed a quick kiss on Mariel's cheek. She grimaced and slipped aside to let Koji and Silas pass by into the kitchen.
"I'm going out for a cigarette," she decided and announced to no one in particular. Shrugging on her husband's coat, she hurried out the door.
