"Brr!"
Aya shuffled inside hurriedly, Mariel and Tristan blowing into Nikos's apartment behind her on the cold winter breeze. She shivered despite her heavy fur coat, legs bare except a pair of thin nylons.
"Hello?" Aya peered into the little apartment, while Mariel pulled the door shut with one hand - the other occupied with carrying a small pile of gifts.
"Miss Scarlett, welcome! Merry Christmas." Nikos's voice wafted out from the kitchen, along with the scents of eggnog, mulled wine and spiced ham.
"Merry Christmas to you, too," Mariel called back.
"Merry Christmas, Mariel," answered Nikos, laughing, "and Tristan."
"Merry Christmas, Mr Vallas," called Tristan.
Instead of Nikos coming out to greet them, Koji's head poked out of the kitchen door into the hallway. He came to the doorway to collect their coats and hats for the evening. "Merry Christm's."
Even Mariel could spare Koji a little smile and a "Merry Christmas" on Christmas Eve, but it soon turned into a little frown as Koji turned to Aya and placed a kiss on her lips.
"Mistletoe," said Koji, grinning. He pointed upwards at the little cluster pinned above their heads. "House rules is ya gotta kiss if you get caught un'er it. 'm not complainin' if it means I get ta kiss on Miss Scarlett."
Aya twinkled at him. "Charmed, Mr Kotobuki."
He took her hand, kissed her fingers, and lead her into the warmth and light of the kitchen and dining room, Mariel and Tristan following behind, hand-in-hand.
